Begin with the person's registered first and last names and check Registered. Narrow a common name by selecting Forsyth County or adding a birth year. Middle initial is optional. Try the middle initial both ways when a name does not match. For a person who moved or once registered, include Removed or Denied. Federal National Voter Registration Act safeguards prevent systematic cancellation solely because someone did not vote, without the required notice and waiting process. A status change can reflect mail, a reported move, death, voluntary action, or the formal maintenance process. It should not be reduced to a guess about civic participation.

Current downloads and old poll books answer different questions. The weekly file is a present-day snapshot. Historical research may require State Board of Elections series, Forsyth election returns, registration books, poll books, precinct material, or retained maps. Exact years for surviving Forsyth poll books were not located in the official sources, so confirm holdings before planning a visit or request.

Search the State Archives of North Carolina catalog by Forsyth County, election record series, and personal name. Then ask staff about unindexed volumes, microfilm, access limits, and retention. Locally, the North Carolina Collection at Central Library can supply newspapers, ward maps, city directories, and election ephemera that place a name or address in period context.

For records before the 1913 consolidation, try Winston and Salem as separate place names. Pair any retained register with the city directory and local newspaper for the same year. That comparison can establish context, but it must not turn an old entry into a claim about a person's present status.
